An Echo in the Chambers of My Heart: I: Recollection/Repetition
Part II next Friday
There were times I saw love in your eyes
And felt it in your fingers on my chest;
The scent of it would waft up from your hair
And bring my eyes to tears when you embraced me.
I would taste your tears and tears and sweat
And understand that salt was love’s one savour.
There were times of worried-whispered words;
Confessions halting, halted, and refused;
And moments where a momentary bliss
So overswept my hopes and expectations—
Leaving me responseless but to vow
To always value what I can’t repay.
And there are times now—long as you’ve been gone—
Where the pain and joy and peace and grief—
Which are what remain to me of you—
Harrow me afresh as when we met
And when I knew I’d lost you.
