You didn’t mean to, I don’t think,
But when you broke my heart
(And that harsh sequence is not yet complete),
When you entranced and captured and then left in shambles
All I had to take and give and breathe,
You taught me something I’d not known of love:
Some thing that I had said, expressed, explained
A thousand times… but never understood.
Understanding, love, can’t be divorced from suffering;
They’re intertwined and married and the pain
Is part and parcel in a fallen world.
I will drink this cup until it’s dry… or I am drowning;
Push my limits until muscles fail;
Tear into the heart and root of Love
Until I have emptied out my violence
Broken every barrier that stands
Between me and my hope for what will be…
I will rage until my raging’s done
And I cry out: “Oh Abba! Abba! Abba!”
