Fire & Ice
Originally composed Winter of 2006
While finger points to cloudy sky, I,
Who have been waiting ages on the hill, still,
Wait—and pray;
I do not know for whom.
Each word I speak still intimates
But what I cannot see;
And yet I stand still waiting, wishing
For a sign of something—something…
That will warm me.
Although still clouds obscure the sky,
The stars remain, they stay the same;
Though not a tongue will testify,
The stones cry out, they shake the sky
And speak of white-hot Flame in Flesh
To my cold heart, my frozen chest.
And yet, at last, I drop my eyes,
I drop my hand—ignore the cries
Beneath my feet—and turn to you,
Return a glance from eyes ice-blue
That seems to say: “Our love’s complete;
We need each other…” so we meet
And so we die as our cold lips and icy eyes
Connect and lead us down the hill
Into a valley further still from stars and God
And what I knew, into a fire, still
And blue.
